What Does “Cultural Christian” Mean?
In a July 2024 conversation with psychologist Jordan Peterson, Musk described himself as a “cultural Christian,” a term that seems to reflect his belief in certain Christian principles without fully committing to Christianity as a religion. Musk said that Christian beliefs “result in the greatest happiness for humanity” and noted that he agrees with many of the teachings of Jesus. However, the term “cultural Christian” is ambiguous and doesn’t quite fit neatly into the traditional religious categories.
This isn’t Musk’s first foray into religious self-description. In a 2021 interview with The Babylon Bee, a satirical Christian conservative site, Musk echoed similar sentiments. He acknowledged the wisdom in the teachings of Jesus but stopped short of endorsing Christianity as his primary faith.
A Tangled Relationship with Judaism
Musk’s relationship with religion doesn’t stop at Christianity. In a 2023 interview with The JC, Musk described himself as “aspirationally Jewish,” attributing this partly to his childhood exposure to Hebrew school teachings. This self-description seemed to be a nod to his partial cultural and educational experiences with Judaism. However, his public persona and statements, especially concerning conspiracy theories and controversial rhetoric, have often overshadowed this label, leading to accusations of antisemitism.
