A Common Last Name, But No Family Ties

Despite sharing the same last name and now an on-screen connection, Lamorne Morris and Garrett Morris are not related.

Lamorne Morris, born in Chicago, has made a name for himself in Hollywood with his comedic talents. He’s best known for his role as the quirky and lovable Winston Bishop on FOX’s hit sitcom New Girl, where he kept audiences laughing from 2011 to 2018. More recently, he’s been seen in a variety of roles, including his part as Witt Farr, a state trooper, in the fifth season of Fargo. Additionally, Canadian viewers might recognize him as the spokesperson for BMO, starring in several of the bank's advertisements.

Garrett Morris, on the other hand, is an SNL legend. Born in 1937, Garrett became the first Black cast member of Saturday Night Live when the show debuted in 1975. He remained with the show until 1980, making history and breaking barriers during his time there. While his career has had its share of struggles, including a 40-year battle with cocaine addiction and surviving a gunshot wound in 1994, Garrett has persevered. On his 87th birthday, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a testament to his enduring legacy in the entertainment industry.

Lamorne Morris’s Family Background

Lamorne Morris has kept much of his personal life private, especially when it comes to his family. However, in a few interviews, he has shared some insights. Lamorne’s mother worked for the United States Postal Service for over 40 years, and he’s spoken fondly of her dedication. In an interview with The Ringer, he humorously mentioned how his mother would insist on him using USPS for any packages, saying, “That’s what raised you.”

His relationship with his father, Ernest Morris, was more complicated. In 2017, Lamorne revealed that he and his father, who had a history of drug dealing, had not been in touch for some time. Sadly, Ernest passed away in 2023. Lamorne paid tribute to his father on Instagram, sharing a heartfelt post that also served as a reminder to mend estranged relationships before it’s too late.

The On-Screen Connection

Lamorne Morris’s portrayal of Garrett Morris in Saturday Night is a fitting tribute to the iconic comedian. The film, which is set to capture the chaotic behind-the-scenes moments of the first live taping of Saturday Night Live in 1975, will see Lamorne stepping into the shoes of a man who played a significant role in shaping the show’s legacy.

While Lamorne and Garrett may not be family by blood, their connection through this film underscores the impact that both have had — and continue to have — in the world of comedy and entertainment. Whether it’s through Lamorne’s modern-day humor or Garrett’s trailblazing work on SNL, both actors have made their mark in unique and memorable ways.
