The Yorkshire Dales have become an unmistakable star in All Creatures Great and Small, showcasing the stunning natural landscape of northern England with as much charisma as the show's beloved characters. Filmed primarily around the Dales, the series has not only brought James Herriot’s stories to life but also reintroduced viewers to the sweeping hills, quaint villages, and vibrant pastures that make the Dales iconic.

The show’s producers aimed to create an authentic 1930s setting, using the town of Grassington as the fictional village of Darrowby. Grassington’s square was transformed into a charming retro marketplace, complete with vintage shopfronts like Wood’s General Store and J.A. Dean Drapers & Hosiery, capturing life during wartime Britain with remarkable attention to detail. The town’s transformation into Darrowby has sparked tourism, with fans eager to see everything from the striped awnings and war-era posters to the pub that stands in for The Drovers Arms, a favorite of Siegfried and Tristan.

Beyond Grassington, the series utilizes other stunning locations around the Dales. The village of Kettlewell in Wharfedale, for instance, serves as a backdrop for many scenes, including a memorable track where James Herriot is seen running. This stretch, Top Mere Road, provides breathtaking views across Wharfedale and adds a raw, rural charm to the series’ depiction of country life. The Alderson family farm, a recurring location in the series, is actually Yockenthwaite Farm. Surrounded by dramatic landscapes and ancient stone bridges, this location embodies the rural essence that defines Herriot’s world.

The show also uses wider landscapes in the Yorkshire Dales to capture the challenges of veterinary life in the remote countryside. The expansive moors between Malham and Arncliffe, particularly on Cowside and Malham Moor, are frequently featured in the series, showcasing the winding, sheep-filled roads where James and Siegfried often travel. These rugged landscapes enhance the show's authenticity, portraying the unpredictable and often arduous journeys that veterinarians in the 1930s undertook to reach distant farms.

The attention to natural beauty and historical accuracy in All Creatures Great and Small has not only won over fans of the series but has also spurred new interest in the Yorkshire Dales as a destination. The series brings to life the distinct beauty of the Dales, from its rolling hills to hidden waterfalls like Janet’s Foss, where James is seen swimming in one episode. This scenic blend of lush valleys, rugged moors, and charming villages has made the Yorkshire Dales a character of its own, adding emotional depth and visual allure to each episode.

In essence, All Creatures Great and Small goes beyond being just a period drama. It acts as a love letter to the Yorkshire Dales, capturing its timeless landscapes and historical spirit while reminding audiences of the beauty and resilience embedded in rural life. For viewers worldwide, the Dales have become synonymous with Herriot’s heartwarming tales, cementing this countryside haven as a star in its own right.
